Geometric Desingularization of a Cusp Singularity in Slow–Fast Systems with Applications to Zeeman’s Examples

چکیده
The cusp singularity—a point at which two curves of fold points meet—is a prototypical example in Takens’ classification of singularities in constrained equations, which also includes folds, folded saddles, folded nodes, among others. In this article, we study cusp singularities in singularly perturbed systems for sufficiently small values of the perturbation parameter, in the regime in which these systems exhibit fast and slow dynamics. Our main result is an analysis of the cusp point using the method of geometric desingularization, also known as the blow-up method, from the field of geometric singular perturbation theory. Our analysis of the cusp singularitywas inspired by the nerve impulse example of Zeeman, andwe also apply our main theorem to it. Finally, a brief review of geometric singular perturbation theory for the two elementary singularities from the Takens’ classification occurring for the nerve impulse example—folds and folded saddles—is included to make this article self-contained.

Stabilization of slow-fast systems at fold points
In this document, we deal with the stabilization problem of slow-fast systems (or singularly perturbed Ordinary Differential Equations) at a non-hyperbolic point. The class of systems studied here have the following properties: 1) they have one fast variable and an arbitrary number of slow variables, 2) they have a non-hyperbolic singularity of the fold type at the origin. The presence of the a...
متن کاملProjective Surfaces with a three-divisible Set of Cusps
0 Introduction We consider algebraic surfaces Y ⊂ IP3(C). A cusp (=singularity A2) on Y is a singularity near which the surface is given in local (analytic) coordinates x, y and z, centered at the singularity, by an equation xy − z = 0. This is an isolated quotient singularity C2/ZZ3. A set P1, ..., Pn of cusps on Y is called 3-divisible, if there is a cyclic global triple cover of Y branched p...
متن کاملCombinatorics of rational singularities
A normal surface singularity is rational if and only if the dual intersection graph of a desingularization satisfies some combinatorial properties. In fact, the graphs defined in this way are trees. In this paper we give geometric features of these trees. In particular, we prove that the number of vertices of valency ≥ 3 in the dual intersection tree of the minimal desingularization of a ration...
متن کاملNormal forms of Hopf Singularities: Focus Values Along with some Applications in Physics
This paper aims to introduce the original ideas of normal form theory and bifurcation analysis and control of small amplitude limit cycles in a non-technical terms so that it would be comprehensible to wide ranges of Persian speaking engineers and physicists. The history of normal form goes back to more than one hundreds ago, that is to the original ideas coming from Henry Poincare. This tool p...
متن کاملOptimal production and marketing planning with geometric programming approach
One of the primary assumptions in most optimal pricing methods is that the production cost is a non-increasing function of lot-size. This assumption does not hold for many real-world applications since the cost of unit production may have non-increasing trend up to a certain level and then it starts to increase for many reasons such as an increase in wages, depreciation, etc. Moreover, the prod...
